THE WAR IS OVER!!!

The end of the "Bush" War!

November 5th, 2008, by Richard Okelberry – With a sweeping victory yesterday in the nation presidential election one thing should be certain, the troops are coming home.  Of all the promises made by Obama during the campaign, it was his stand against the War in Iraq that ultimately gave him victory over Hillary Clinton and paved the way to defeating a weak Republican candidate.  Now that all the speeches are given and all the votes have been cast, those who have long opposed the War in Iraq can finally claim victory and expect with full confidence that Obama on the day following his inauguration in January will issue an order to his military commanders to bring the troops home.

On the Barack Obama web site and as echoed throughout many of his speeches, President-Elect Barack Obama has state that, “Immediately upon taking office, Obama will give his Secretary of Defense and military commanders a new mission in Iraq:  successfully ending the war.  The removal of our troops will be responsible and phased.”

While it is certain that troop movements of this scale may take some time, we should all be certain that under his command Obama will no longer risk the life of even one more U.S. serviceman or servicewoman to defend Iraqis or fight insurgents/terrorists in Iraq. While many of the headlines this morning around the country are centered around the fact that Obama is the first Black President, I want to be the first to say, ”THE WAR IS OVER!!!”

What makes you certain that large troop movements take a lot of time? From the Kuwait border to Baghdad in 2003 took less than a month.

    rmwarnick,

Movements on the battle field is one thing, staging and deployment is another. It took many months to bring the “surge” up to the maximum level, even with all the bases and encampments in place. Certainly, no military in the world can deploy, redeploy and withdraw as effectively nor as quickly as the U.S. military can. Still, our current operations in Iraq are in a “dug-in” position with massive staging points and forward command centers. These installations take time to dismantle. Based on Obama’s campaign promises, he intends to remove every single soldier and base from within Iraq. I was simply trying to concede that this effort will take some time but understand that many who voted for him expect zero delay in the process and zero casualties. It would be a terrible thing for Obama if he failed to live up to his most valuable campaign pledge. The pledge that gave him the nomination and thus the election. The election was not won this week but many months back when his stance on Iraq pushed him past Hillary. McCain was never a credible threat once Palin was destroyed by the media.

I should say though that beyond defending themselves from direct attacks on bases, under Obama we should all expect that during the withdrawal our forces will not engage in a single military operation inside Iraq. Wouldn’t you agree that this should be expected by those who voted for Obama in this election?

I’m not certain if Obama can survive being labeled as just another war monger in the likeness of Bush.
